Years 5–11 · Small groups

Tuition that follows a written plan, not a worksheet pile.

We teach maths, English, combined science and study skills in groups of six or fewer. Every learner starts with a short assessment, then works through a plan their parent can read.

Term time · Weekday evenings & Saturday mornings

Group size

Six learners maximum

One tutor per group, with the same tutor each week where the timetable allows.

Session length

75 minutes

Split into teaching, guided practice and a short independent task set for the week.

Subjects

Maths, English, science

Plus a study-skills block for Years 9–11 covering revision planning and exam technique.

How tuition works here

Four steps from first enquiry to a progress review.

Nothing starts until we know what a learner can already do. The assessment is free, takes about forty minutes, and you receive the plan that comes out of it whether or not you book a term.

01

Baseline assessment

A written task plus a short conversation about what feels hardest. We mark it by topic rather than by total score.

02

A one-page plan

Six to eight priority topics, the order we will teach them in, and the group that fits both the level and your week.

03

Weekly sessions

Teaching, practice at the board and in books, then one short task to complete before the next session.

04

Mid-term review

A written note halfway through each term: topics closed, topics still open, and what we suggest next.

Subject lanes

Four lanes, each with its own teaching sequence.

Lanes are grouped by level rather than by school year, so a Year 8 learner working ahead and a Year 9 learner consolidating can sit in the same group.

Years 5–11

Maths

Number fluency first, then algebra and geometry built on top of it. Higher groups work through exam-style multi-step problems.

  • Place value, fractions, ratio and proportion
  • Algebraic manipulation and graphing
  • Angle reasoning, area and volume
  • Worked-method marking, not answer marking
Years 5–11

English

Reading closely and writing with a plan. We work from short extracts so every learner can read, annotate and respond inside one session.

  • Inference and quotation selection
  • Paragraph structure and essay planning
  • Punctuation and sentence variety
  • Creative and transactional writing tasks
Years 9–11

Combined science

Biology, chemistry and physics on a rotating six-week cycle, with required practicals explained before the written questions.

  • Equation recall and unit handling
  • Required practicals and method writing
  • Graph interpretation and data questions
  • Six-mark answer structure
Years 9–11

Study skills

A shorter block for learners who know the content but lose marks to timing, planning or note-taking. Runs alongside a subject lane.

  • Building a revision timetable that survives a real week
  • Active recall and spaced practice
  • Reading a mark scheme properly
  • Timed practice with a short debrief

Weekly timetable

Term-time sessions, published in advance.

Groups run to the same slot each week so families can plan around them. Where a slot is full we hold a short waiting list and offer the next matching group.

Inside a session

Seventy-five minutes with a predictable shape.

Learners settle faster when they know what is coming. Every group follows the same rhythm, whichever subject lane it belongs to.

  • Ten minutes recapping last week's task, with common errors worked on the board
  • Twenty-five minutes of new teaching, one topic only
  • Thirty minutes of guided practice while the tutor moves between learners
  • Ten minutes setting and starting the task for the week ahead
  • A short written note home whenever something notable changes

Term plans

Choose by how many lanes a learner needs.

Plans are billed per term and cover twelve teaching weeks. Materials, marking and the mid-term review note are included in all three.

Questions parents ask

The practical details, before you enquire.

What happens at the baseline assessment?
Your learner completes a written task of about thirty minutes, then talks through two or three questions with a tutor. We mark it topic by topic and send you a one-page plan within a few days. There is no charge and no obligation to book.
Can we join partway through a term?
Yes, if a group has space and the level matches. We pro-rate the remaining weeks and give your learner the earlier topic notes so they are not reading from behind. If no group fits, we will say so rather than place them in the wrong one.
What happens if a session is missed?
You receive the session notes and the week's task by email, and we offer one catch-up slot per term in a matching group where space allows. Illness during an exam term is handled case by case — tell us early and we will work around it.
How much work is set between sessions?
One task, designed to take twenty to thirty minutes. It always covers something already taught, never something new, so it should not need a parent to teach it. We mark the method and return it the following week.
Do you follow our school's exam board?
Tell us the board at enquiry and we match the specification for Years 10 and 11, including the formulae a learner is expected to recall. Below Year 10 we teach the underlying topics, which carry across boards without rework.
Is one-to-one teaching available instead?
Group teaching is what we do well, so it is our default. Where an assessment shows a gap that a group cannot close — a large break in schooling, for instance — we will say that plainly and discuss a short individual block before moving into a group.

Tell us the year group and the subject.

We reply with the groups that currently have space and a choice of assessment times. If nothing fits your week, we will tell you when the next slot opens rather than put you on an open-ended list.

  • No charge for the baseline assessment
  • You receive the written plan either way
  • Places confirmed only once a group is matched

We use what you send here only to arrange an assessment and reply about group availability.
